SCAN offers a variety of educational opportunities for artists of all skill levels:
- Each spring and fall we sponsor a series of one-day art workshops with professional artists.
- As member interest indicates, we sponsor week-long workshops or weekly classes. All events are open to the public.
- "Drop-in" figure drawing sketch sessions with professional models are a popular feature held monthly except in December. These sessions meet 9:30AM to 12:30PM on the fourth Wednesday of the month except in November. The date in November is subject to change based onholidays. No registration is required.
- An Open Studio for painting and drawing is available to members every month (except in February and December). The studio is open 1:00PM to 4:00PM on the second Wednesday of the month for individual or group activities. No registration is required. Please see the Side Panel for additional details.
- As part of our mission in education, SCAN provides scholarships each spring to outstanding graduating high school seniors who have been accepted at an art school.

Cold Wax Workshop with Katushka Millones
Workshop: October 5th, 10am - 3pm
Join us for a Workshop: Cold Wax with Katushka Millones Saturday, October 5th, 10am - 3pm. The fee is $80 for members and $100 for non-members. The theme is open — meaning participants can do whatever they want (figurative or landscape) in any style. In this workshop students may work ONLY in oil medium and cold wax will be supplied Students should bring their own paints and canvas/surfaces. Watercolor Workshop with Dennis Stuart
Workshop: November 9th, 10am - 4pm
Join us for a watercolor workshop with Dennis Stuart: being instructed on painting loosely and colorfully with watercolor, a coastal theme, for beginner and intermediate artists. This event will be at The Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street in Newtown, CT. (Lower Level).
The morning will consist of a demonstration discussing technique, materials, pigments, and color relationships from start to finish as a half-sheet watercolor. Questions are encouraged.
The afternoon will focus on class members executing the demo and completing a finished watercolor. The workshop’s focus is on enjoying painting and learning from one another. Each artist will receive individual attention and will complete a watercolor painting using their own experience and skill.
Materials suggested;
Watercolor paper 15 x 22 in. (half sheet) singular sheet or
watercolor block, watercolor paints in tube or pan
watercolor brushes round and Flat, sponge,
Kosher salt, paper towels, and a container for water.
